Every value is linked to the document it came from and the date we read it. "Not published" means the manufacturer does not publish that figure and we did not substitute one. Cost column is a monthly ceiling, not a measurement: 4 running hours a day at $0.18/kWh. Where a manufacturer publishes an actual power consumption we use it; otherwise we derive volts times amps from the nameplate, which is a ceiling the machine does not continuously draw. Here is the whole calculation.

The number nobody else publishes

GE is the only manufacturer in this category that prints a per-hour rate. The Opal 2.0 manual gives 38 lbs per day / 1.6 lb per hour.

That is more useful than the daily figure. A tall glass of ice is roughly half a pound, so 1.6 lbs an hour is about three glasses an hour, or a glass every twenty minutes, from a machine that is already up to temperature. Every other manufacturer publishes a daily rate only, which tells you nothing about the wait.

GE attaches its own caveat to the whole table: "Technical data and performance information provided for reference only." That is the manufacturer telling you these are ideal-conditions numbers, and it is worth taking seriously — production rates in this category assume cold inlet water and a cool room.

GE contradicts itself, and we can show where

The same mix-up drives the wattage argument you will see everywhere. 2.5 A at 120 V is 300 VA; 3.0 A at 120 V is 360 VA. The "300 W" and "360 W" camps are each describing a different Opal, and neither figure is a consumption measurement.

What it costs to run

There is no published wattage, so the cost figure has to come from the nameplate. 3.0 A at 120 V is 360 VA. At four running hours a day that is 43.2 kWh a month, and at the EIA's June 2026 US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh — we round to 18 cents — that is $7.78 a month.

That is a ceiling, and it is worth being precise about why. A nameplate is what the appliance may draw at maximum, used for sizing circuits. A compressor appliance draws less than that while running, and nothing while the bin is full and it is idle. The real figure is lower. We publish the ceiling because it is the only number GE gives us, and we call it a ceiling rather than dressing it up. Full working: the running-cost method.

Who should buy this

  • Buy it if you want the machine with the best documentation, the widest availability of filters and cleaning kits, and the largest body of troubleshooting information written about it. Three years in, that ecosystem is worth more than a spec advantage.
  • Buy it if knowing when ice will arrive matters, because it is the only machine with a published hourly rate.
  • Skip it if the electricity bill is the deciding factor. The Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255 publishes 185 W and works out at less than $4 a month on the same assumptions.
  • Skip it if counter space is tight. At 16.5 inches tall plus 3 inches of clearance, it needs an open counter.

What GE does not publish

No decibel rating. No warranty term in the specification table. No wattage. And notably, the GE product page for the XPIO13SCSS carries dimensions and nothing else — no electrical spec, no production rate, no bin capacity, no weight. Everything useful is in the manual, which almost nobody reads before buying.

GE's owner's manual rates the 2.0 at 3.0 A, which at 120 V is a 360 VA nameplate — the highest here. That is a ceiling, not a running draw, but it is the ceiling you are budgeting an outlet for.

The 3 lb bin is not refrigerated. Ice melts, the meltwater drains back into the reservoir and gets re-frozen, so the bin is a holding tray rather than a freezer.

GE is the only manufacturer in this set that publishes an hourly rate as well as a daily one, which makes 'how long until I have a glass of ice' answerable from published data instead of guesswork.

Skip this if

You want the cheapest route to nugget ice, or a small footprint. It is the biggest current draw in this table and its 3 lb bin empties fast.

How much ice does the GE Profile Opal 2.0 make?

GE's owner's manual for the Opal 2.0 (49-9000029 Rev. 6) states 38 lbs per day and 1.6 lbs per hour. GE's public Opal support page states 24 pounds per day, but every figure on that page matches the first-generation Opal manual exactly, and the page never says which model it describes.

How many watts does the GE Opal 2.0 use?

GE does not publish a wattage. The owner's manual gives a current rating of 3.0 A, which at 120 V mains is a 360 VA nameplate. That is a ceiling, not a consumption figure: it is the maximum the appliance may draw, and a cycling compressor appliance draws less than its nameplate while running and nothing at all while idle.

What does the GE Opal 2.0 cost to run per month?

No more than about $7.78 a month at four running hours a day and 18 cents per kWh, computed from the 360 VA nameplate. The real figure is lower because the nameplate is a ceiling. We publish the ceiling because it is the number we can source, and we label it as one.

Does the Opal 2.0 keep ice frozen?

No. The 3 lb bin is not refrigerated. Ice melts, the meltwater drains back to the reservoir and gets frozen again. The bin looks permanently full while the machine is running because the machine keeps replacing what melted.

How is the Opal 2.0 different from the original Opal?

By the manuals: the 2.0 is rated 3.0 A against the original's 2.5 A, 38 lbs a day against 24, and 37.6 lbs empty against 44. The bin capacity is the same 3.0 lbs on both. The 2.0 is faster, lighter and draws more.
