Troubleshooting

Your machine is running and no ice is arriving. Start here. Every fix is ordered by how often it turns out to be the answer, and the free ones come first.

Nearly every fault in this category is one of three things: not enough water reaching where the machine expects it, not enough heat leaving the machine, or mineral scale on the surface that has to freeze. None of those is a repair. All of them look, from the outside, like a machine that has died.

Diagnose by pattern, not by symptom

The single most useful question is when did it change, because the timeline narrows the cause faster than the symptom does.

The three underlying causes

  1. Water not reaching the right place. Low reservoir, a component out of position after cleaning, a machine that is not level, or flow restricted by biofilm. The machine reports this as no ice or as an add-water warning even when the reservoir looks full.
  2. Heat not leaving. Blocked clearance, a hot room, or warm water going in. Frigidaire specifies running the machine below 90F ambient and pouring colder water into the tank; the original Opal manual gives an operating range of 55F to 90F. Outside that, the machine is not faulty, it is over-matched.
  3. Scale on the freezing cylinder. The gradual one. Scale insulates the surface heat has to move through, so production falls, ice comes out wet or undersized, and the auger starts to squeal. Descaling fixes all three, and it is a different procedure from cleaning.

The distinction that fixes half these pages

Cleaning uses detergent and removes biofilm. Descaling uses an acid and dissolves mineral deposits. They are different chemistry solving different problems, and doing one does not do the other.

Bad taste with normal production means clean. Slow production, wet ice or a squeal means descale. Most people in this category clean thoroughly, find nothing improves, and conclude the machine is broken. The procedures are on cleaning and descaling.

Two things to stop for

  • Anything electrical that smells or feels hot. A warm plug, a burnt smell, discoloration at the outlet. Stop and get a qualified opinion rather than plugging it in again.
  • Anything that requires opening the machine. There is a sealed refrigeration system and a mains-powered motor in there. Neither is user-serviceable, and no ice is worth an injury.

Whether repair is realistic comes down to whether your manufacturer publishes a service procedure and sells parts.
