Countertop Ice Makers

The wider category: nugget, bullet and clear-cube machines that sit on a counter and need nothing but a plug and a jug of water. Which shape of ice you actually want decides everything else.

"Countertop ice maker" is a shelf label, not a product. Underneath it sit three genuinely different machines that make three genuinely different things, and the most common way to be disappointed by this purchase is to buy the wrong one of the three without realizing there was a choice.

The three machines

The mechanisms are not settings. No nugget machine makes clear cubes and no bullet machine makes nugget ice, and there is no countertop machine that does two of the three. The full mechanical comparison is on nugget ice versus bullet ice.

What all of them share

  • No plumbing. Every machine here is reservoir-fed. You pour water in and it recirculates, including the meltwater from its own bin. Plumbed machines are a different appliance class, compared on countertop versus undercounter.
  • An unrefrigerated bin. None of them keeps ice frozen. This is the thing people find out after buying and it is on its own page.
  • A small bin. Three pounds is the category standard, about six tall glasses, and it is what limits you far more than the rated daily output does.
  • A clearance requirement. Three to four inches at the sides and rear, per every manual that publishes one. That gap is how heat leaves, and blocking it costs you ice and money at the same time.
  • Maintenance. Scale slows them down, biofilm ruins the taste, and both are inevitable in a machine that recirculates standing water.

Cost column is a monthly ceiling, not a measurement: 4 running hours a day at $0.18/kWh. Where a manufacturer publishes an actual power consumption we use it; otherwise we derive volts times amps from the nameplate, which is a ceiling the machine does not continuously draw. The Frigidaire trio is the most useful comparison on this site, because it is one manufacturer with one documentation standard across all three ice types: 185 W for nugget, 200 W for bullet, and 90 to 120 W for clear cube. Clear ice is the cheapest to make and the slowest, which is exactly what the physics predicts.

Note also that GE publishes no wattage at all for the Opal 2.0, only a 3.0 A current rating. That is why its cost figure is labeled as a ceiling rather than a consumption number, a distinction explained in full on the running-cost page.

The specification people forget

Height. A standard gap between a kitchen counter and the upper cabinets is about 18 inches. The Frigidaire EFIC235 is 19 inches tall, so it does not fit under one at all. The EFIC452 is 14.1 inches, and it is the only machine here that clears the gap with room to lift the lid.

That is a spec buried on page nine or ten of a manual, and it is the most common reason one of these machines gets returned.

How to choose, in four steps

  • Pick the ice type. Chewable, volume, or slow-melting. This is the real decision.
  • Measure the space, including 3 to 4 inches of clearance and the height under any cabinet.
  • Compare bin capacity, not rated daily output. Every machine here makes more ice per day than a household drinks.
  • Then compare running cost, preferring machines whose makers publish a real wattage over ones that publish only a nameplate.
