Nugget Report
How nugget ice is made, what it costs to run a machine, why the bin does not stay frozen, and how to clean the thing so it does not turn into a science experiment.

Buying guides in this category tend to stop at the purchase. That is a strange place to stop, because most of what makes owning one of these machines good or bad happens afterwards: whether the ice keeps (it does not), what the electricity actually costs (less than people think), and whether you clean it (mostly not).
So these guides are organized around the questions people ask after they have started living with the appliance, plus the few before it that genuinely change which one you buy.
| Group | Answers | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The ice itself | What nugget ice is, how it differs from bullet and clear, and where it belongs | Nugget ice vs bullet ice |
| Owning one | Running costs, sizing, water, electrical needs, how long it takes | What it costs to run |
| Maintenance | Cleaning, descaling, mold, filters, and what water to use | How to clean a nugget ice maker |
Because nothing in this category publishes one. Not one roundup we examined while researching this site reports cost-to-run, wattage or kWh for any model, and the handful of pages that do cover it are single-model, years old, and built on a wattage figure with no stated source.
The version here computes a monthly figure for every machine we could source an electrical rating for, states whether that rating is a published consumption figure or a nameplate ceiling, cites the manual page it came from, names the duty cycle assumed, cites the EIA for the electricity rate, and lets you substitute your own numbers. That is a low bar and it is not currently cleared by anybody else.
The cleaning advice that exists for these machines is brand-specific: GE's support pages cover the Opal, and if you own something else you are on your own. Meanwhile the machines with the least documentation are the ones whose owners most need a written procedure.
The cleaning guide here is assembled from every manufacturer manual we could read, with the brand differences called out where they differ. It also draws the distinction almost nobody draws, which is worth stating twice: cleaning removes biofilm and needs detergent, descaling dissolves mineral scale and needs an acid, and doing one does not do the other.

Best for Opal owners
A cross-brand cleaning procedure, and the cleaning-versus-descaling distinction nobody draws.

No. The bin is unrefrigerated and the meltwater recirculates. What to do instead.
