How Much Water Does a Nugget Ice Maker Use?

Almost none of it is used, in the sense of being gone. It is converted into the ice in the bin, and then most of it comes back. Which changes what refilling and hard water really mean.

The one that can take a water line

This question is usually asked in the plumbing sense — how much am I going to be carrying to this thing — and the answer only makes sense once you understand that a countertop ice maker is a closed loop rather than a tap.

What the manufacturers publish, which is nearly nothing

Reservoir capacity ought to be a basic specification. In this category it is almost entirely absent.

One machine out of six, and it is the cheapest one here. Any tank volume you see quoted for the others is coming from a retail listing rather than from a manufacturer specification table.

Silonn's 0.32 gal (1.2L) is therefore the only sourced number available for scale in the whole category, and it is for the smallest machine here. It is a genuinely useful anchor anyway: a liter and a bit of water is roughly two and a half pounds, and the same machine's basket holds 1.32 lbs, so a full tank is a little under two full baskets of ice.

Why the loop changes the question

Here is what actually happens to a liter of water you pour in.

  1. A pump moves it over a chilled surface, where some of it freezes and is harvested into the bin.
  2. The bin is insulated but not refrigerated — this is true of every machine in this category — so the ice immediately starts melting.
  3. That meltwater drains back down into the reservoir and is frozen again.
  4. The only water that actually leaves is what you scoop out as ice, plus a small amount of evaporation.

So a machine running unattended in an empty kitchen reaches a rough equilibrium and the level barely moves. A machine serving a household drops as fast as people take ice out of it. Consumption tracks your drinking, not the machine's runtime, which is why two owners of the same machine will describe refilling completely differently.

The bin behavior underpinning all of this is the single most misunderstood thing in the category, and it has its own page: do countertop ice makers keep ice frozen.

How often you will actually be refilling

Work it from the ice rather than the machine. A tall glass of nugget ice is roughly half a pound of water. So:

  • Two people, a few drinks a day. Perhaps a pound or two of ice removed daily, which is under a liter of water. On most machines that is a top-up every day or two.
  • A household of four in summer. Several pounds a day, which on a small-reservoir machine is more than one refill daily.
  • A machine running with nobody taking ice. Very little. It fills the bin, the melt returns, and it idles.

The arithmetic for how much ice a household actually gets through is on how much ice you need, and it converts directly into water because the two are the same substance.

The part that matters more: minerals concentrate

This is the real consequence of a closed loop and it is not obvious.

When water leaves the system as ice or vapour, the dissolved minerals in it largely do not go with it. They stay behind in the reservoir. Every top-up adds more minerals to water that is already carrying them, so the water in a machine that is only ever topped up gets progressively harder rather than staying the same.

That is why manufacturers ask you to change the water rather than refill it. Frigidaire's EFIC255 manual recommends changing the water in the reservoir every 24 hours, which reads like fussiness until you follow the concentration through.

It is also why descaling is a recurring job on these machines rather than a one-off. The machine has no mechanism for getting minerals out; they accumulate on the coldest surface, which is the one making your ice. The refilling escape hatch

One machine documented here can be plumbed. NewAir's NIM030SS00 manual includes a section on installing an automatic water line and states the machine can be connected to an external water source with a 1/4 inch PE tube.

That removes the refilling chore entirely and does nothing whatever about mineral concentration, which is worth being clear about. A plumbed machine still recirculates and still concentrates; it simply tops itself up. Whether plumbing a countertop appliance is worth it in a normal kitchen is argued on do you need a water line, and the machines that can take one are on nugget ice makers with a water line.

What to actually do

  • Fill from the cold tap, filtered if your water is hard. Reducing the mineral load going in is the only lever you have.
  • Change the water rather than topping it up, at least every few days. Frigidaire says daily; that is the strict end of a real principle.
  • Empty it whenever the machine will sit for more than a day or two. It solves the concentration problem and the biofilm problem at once.
  • Do not chase a reservoir volume figure when shopping. Only one manufacturer in this category publishes one, and it is not the number that decides anything.

Silonn publishes what almost no other budget brand does: voltage, ice-making and ice-harvesting current, working power, rate, basket capacity, weight and size, all in one table.

The self-clean cycle is documented in the same manual — hold the ON/OFF/CLEAN button for five seconds, run 30 minutes on plain water, weekly. That is a longer cycle and a clearer frequency than either GE or Frigidaire commits to.

Silonn advertises a '35db low-noise design' on its product page. There is no test standard or measuring distance behind that number, so it is not recorded as a specification here and the noise field still reads Not published.

Skip this if

You want nugget ice or a bin that holds more than a couple of glasses. It makes hard bullet cubes and the basket is 1.32 lbs.

170 W published, like the Frigidaire, is a real consumption figure rather than a ceiling. It gives this machine the lowest sourced running cost on the site.

It is the deepest machine here at 17.64 inches. Measure your counter depth before the cabinet doors decide for you.

NewAir publishes the refrigerant charge (20 g of R600a), which almost nobody does. It is a small sign of a manual written by someone who expected it to be read.

Skip this if

Two people want iced drinks at the same time. Thirty pounds a day is the smallest rated output here and there is no published bin capacity to check.

Questions people actually ask

How much water does a countertop ice maker hold?

Almost none of them publish it. Of the machines documented on this site, only Silonn prints a reservoir capacity in its specification table, at 0.32 gallons or 1.2 liters for the SLIM21. Frigidaire, NewAir and GE publish no tank volume in the specification tables we read, so any figure you see for those machines is coming from a listing rather than a manual.

Does an ice maker use up water?

Barely, in the sense of water leaving the system. These machines recirculate: water is frozen onto a surface, harvested into a bin that is not refrigerated, and as that ice melts the meltwater drains back to the reservoir to be frozen again. Water leaves only in the ice you actually take out, and by evaporation. That is why a machine left running looks like it never needs filling and then suddenly does.

How often do you have to refill a nugget ice maker?

It depends almost entirely on how much ice you remove rather than on how long the machine runs. If you take out a few glasses a day, you are removing perhaps a pound or two of water a day and topping up accordingly. If the machine simply runs with nobody taking ice, it reaches equilibrium and the level barely moves.

Does recirculating water make the ice dirty?

It makes it concentrated. Every mineral in the water you poured in stays in the system when water leaves as ice or vapour, so the remaining water gets progressively harder. That is why manufacturers recommend changing the reservoir water rather than just topping it up, and it is why descaling is a recurring job rather than a one-off.

Should I use distilled water in an ice maker?

Filtered water is the usual recommendation and it reduces the mineral load without the drawbacks. This site covers the question in detail on the water guide, but the short version is that reducing what goes in is the only thing that reduces what builds up, because the machine has no way to get rid of minerals on its own.
