Not one manufacturer in this category publishes a decibel rating. Rather than invent one, here is what actually makes these machines noisy and how to buy around it.

That is an unsatisfying answer to a real question, so the rest of this page is the useful version: what actually makes a nugget machine noisy, which of those noises are faults and which are the machine working correctly, and what you can change.

The four noises, named

GE is the only manufacturer here that documents this, and the first-generation Opal manual has an entire normal sounds page. It names four, and they apply to every auger-driven nugget machine, not just GE's.

  • Whir. The condenser fan. Runs whenever the machine is making ice and is the constant background note.
  • Buzz. The water pump. GE notes it is "slightly noisy" when dry and that the noise "reduces significantly" once it fills with water. If your machine buzzes at startup and then settles, that is the pump priming.
  • Rattle. Refrigerant moving through the cooling system. GE says these reduce significantly once the refrigerant system stabilizes.
  • The auger. Not in GE's list under that name, but it is the sound people mean when they say a nugget machine is loud: ice being scraped off the freezing cylinder and pellets dropping into a hard plastic bin. Intermittent, mechanical, and unavoidable in a machine that makes ice this way.

What you can legitimately infer

Without a dB rating, the only sound-related signal in the published data is how hard a machine has to work. That is a weak proxy and we will not pretend otherwise, but it is a real one: a machine that draws less power and produces less ice runs its compressor and fan less often.

Cost column is a monthly ceiling, not a measurement: 4 running hours a day at $0.18/kWh. Where a manufacturer publishes an actual power consumption we use it; otherwise we derive volts times amps from the nameplate, which is a ceiling the machine does not continuously draw. Here is the whole calculation.

Read that table as what it is. It says the NIM030SS00 does less work per hour than the Opal 2.0. It does not say the NIM030SS00 is quieter, because auger and bin design affect the noise you actually notice more than compressor duty does, and nobody publishes anything about auger or bin design either.

Noises that are not normal

There is one sound that is genuinely diagnostic, and it is the one people search for most: a squeal. A high, continuous squeal from a nugget machine is usually the auger under load, and it usually means scale or a jam rather than a dying motor. Grinding, knocking, and a fan noise that rises and does not fall are the other three worth paying attention to. Everything else on the list above is the machine doing its job.

Placement does more than model choice

  • Give it its clearance. The Opal 2.0 wants 3 inches, the 2.0 Ultra wants 4, the original Opal wants 3 with 0 at the top. A blocked hot-air outlet makes the fan run longer and the compressor work harder. Both of those are noise.
  • Do not put it against a hard corner. Two reflective surfaces at right angles will make any appliance sound louder than it is.
  • Keep the reservoir full. A pump running low on water is louder than a pump running in water, per GE's own note.
  • Run it on a schedule, not continuously. These machines refill the bin as ice melts, so left on they cycle all day. If noise matters, run it in the hour before you want ice.

What we would actually do

Buy for documentation and running cost, place it well, and accept that any auger-driven nugget machine makes an intermittent mechanical noise when it drops ice. If silence in that room is genuinely non-negotiable, a nugget machine is the wrong appliance category, and a bag of ice from the store is the honest alternative.

GE's owner's manual rates the 2.0 at 3.0 A, which at 120 V is a 360 VA nameplate — the highest here. That is a ceiling, not a running draw, but it is the ceiling you are budgeting an outlet for.

The 3 lb bin is not refrigerated. Ice melts, the meltwater drains back into the reservoir and gets re-frozen, so the bin is a holding tray rather than a freezer.

GE is the only manufacturer in this set that publishes an hourly rate as well as a daily one, which makes 'how long until I have a glass of ice' answerable from published data instead of guesswork.

170 W published, like the Frigidaire, is a real consumption figure rather than a ceiling. It gives this machine the lowest sourced running cost on the site.

It is the deepest machine here at 17.64 inches. Measure your counter depth before the cabinet doors decide for you.

NewAir publishes the refrigerant charge (20 g of R600a), which almost nobody does. It is a small sign of a manual written by someone who expected it to be read.

Skip this if

Two people want iced drinks at the same time. Thirty pounds a day is the smallest rated output here and there is no published bin capacity to check.

Questions people actually ask

What is the quietest nugget ice maker?

Nobody can tell you honestly, because no manufacturer in this category publishes a decibel rating. Not GE, not Frigidaire, not NewAir, not any of the budget brands. Any site quoting a dB figure for a nugget ice maker is either measuring it themselves, in which case they should say how, or repeating a number from somewhere else. We publish Not published rather than pick one.

Why is my nugget ice maker so loud?

Four separate sources, and GE's own manual names them: the condenser fan spinning, the water pump (loudest when dry, quieter once primed), refrigerant flowing through the cooling system, and the auger scraping ice off the cylinder wall and dropping pellets into a plastic bin. That last one is the noise people notice, and it is intermittent by design rather than a fault.

Do nugget ice makers get quieter over time?

The pump gets quieter within the first minutes of each run as it fills with water, and the refrigerant rattle typically settles once the system stabilizes. GE documents both of these as normal. A machine that gets louder over time, particularly a squeal or a grinding sound, is telling you something different.

Where should I put a nugget ice maker so it is less annoying?

Away from hard reflective surfaces where possible, and never in a closed alcove: these machines need 3 inches of clearance (4 inches for the Opal 2.0 Ultra) and blocking the hot air outlet makes the fan work harder and longer. A machine that is short of ventilation runs more, and running more is the same as being noisier.
