A small kitchen does not reject these machines on the dimension people measure. It rejects them on the one behind. Almost every listing leads with width, because width is where nugget machines look impressive next to a microwave, and almost every kitchen that cannot take one runs out of depth instead.
So this page works from published dimensions and the clearance the manuals require, and arrives at the number that matters: how much of your counter each machine actually occupies once it can breathe.
The four measurements that decide this
- Depth plus rear clearance. A standard kitchen counter is about 24 to 25 inches deep and the back few inches are usually taken by a backsplash and whatever lives against it. This is the constraint that actually bites.
- Width. Easy to compare and the least binding, but it decides whether the machine can sit between two things that are already there.
- Height against the cabinet gap, plus lid swing. About 18 inches is standard. Every nugget machine here fits under that. Almost none of them lets you open the lid while it is there.
- Weight, if it has to be moved. A machine you must lift out to fill or stow is a machine you will stop using.

The number nobody prints: counter actually used
Take each machine's published depth and add the rear clearance its manufacturer requires. Where a manufacturer publishes no clearance — which is most of them — GE's 3 inches is the only sourced figure in the category to reason from, and this table says so rather than pretending the number is the machine's own.

Read the last column and the ranking inverts. The NewAir NIM030SS00 wins on width by a hair and then loses decisively on the dimension that matters, because 17.64 inches of depth plus air behind it eats almost the whole usable depth of a standard counter. The Frigidaire EFIC255, second narrowest, is the machine that actually leaves you room to work.
Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255, the smallest real footprint
Ten inches wide and 14.6 inches deep by 16.5 tall. On a standard counter that leaves genuine working space in front of it, which none of the deeper machines do.
It is also rated at 44 lbs a day on 185 W published — the strongest cost data on this site — so the small footprint costs you nothing in output. For most small kitchens this is the answer and the rest of the page is detail.
The honest cons: Frigidaire publishes no bin capacity for it at all. The 3 lb figure this site carries comes from retail listings and is flagged as the weakest source tier. Frigidaire also publishes no clearance requirement, so the space behind it is your judgment rather than a specification.
NewAir NIM044BS00, if the bin matters more
At 9.75 inches wide and 15.04 deep it is very nearly as compact as the Frigidaire, and it carries a 3.3 lb bucket capacity — the largest published bin in the category. If your kitchen is small because your household is not, that is the trade worth making.
It is also the lightest full-size machine here at 34.17 lbs, which matters if it lives in a cupboard between uses.
The honest cons: NewAir publishes an ice-making current of 2.7 A rather than a wattage, so its running cost is a ceiling around $6.71 a month rather than a measurement. Its 44 lbs a day comes from the manual's title, not its specification table.
NewAir NIM030SS00, narrowest on paper
If the gap you are filling is defined by width — between a backsplash-mounted rail and a toaster, say — this is the narrowest machine on the site at 9.69 inches wide, and it publishes a real 170 W consumption figure, one of only two machines here that do.
The honest cons: 17.64 inches deep. That is nearly three inches more than the Frigidaire and it is the whole reason this machine is third on a page about small kitchens. Measure the depth of your counter and the depth of what already lives on it before the width tempts you.
The under-cabinet trap
Every nugget machine here is between 16.5 and 17 inches tall, and a standard counter-to-cabinet gap is about 18. So they all fit, and almost none of them can be filled where they stand, because these are top-loading machines and a lid needs somewhere to go.
In practice that means either siting the machine at the end of a run where nothing is above it, or accepting that filling it involves sliding it forward. Neither is a dealbreaker; both are easier to plan for than to discover. The only machine on this site that genuinely clears a cabinet gap with room to open is the Frigidaire EFIC452 at 14.1 inches — and it makes clear cubes rather than nugget ice, which is a different purchase, covered on nugget versus clear.
Why the air gap is not optional
GE requires 3 inches around the Opal 2.0 and 4 inches around the Ultra. Nobody else in this category publishes a figure, which does not mean their machines do not need one.
A countertop ice maker moves heat out of water and dumps it into your kitchen through a condenser. Box that condenser in and the heat has nowhere to go, so the machine runs longer for the same ice. Longer running is more electricity, more wear and, in a small kitchen, a warmer room. Tucking one of these into an alcove to save counter space is the most common way to make it worse at its job.
What a small machine does not cost you
Worth stating plainly, because it is the opposite of the usual appliance rule: in this category you give up very little by going small.
- Bin capacity barely moves. Every machine here holds 3.0 to 3.3 lbs, whatever its footprint.
- Output barely moves either. The 10-inch-wide Frigidaire is rated at 44 lbs a day, higher than the much larger Opal 2.0's 38.
- Running cost is not correlated with size. The narrow NewAir NIM030 publishes 170 W; the bigger Opal 2.0 carries a 360 VA nameplate ceiling.

Where in the kitchen, not just how big
Footprint decides whether a machine can live somewhere. Four other things decide whether that somewhere is a good idea, and in a small kitchen they compete for the same few feet of counter.
- Not beside the oven or the toaster. These machines reject heat into the room and work harder in a warm spot. A run of counter that gets hot when you cook is the worst place in the kitchen for one, for the same reason an alcove is.
- Within reach of a sink. You will fill this machine constantly and drain it periodically. Every foot between it and the tap is a jug carried across a kitchen, and in a small kitchen that jug has nowhere to be put down.
- On its own outlet, ideally. The Opal 2.0 is rated 3.0 A and the smaller machines less, so none of these is a heavy load on its own. Sharing a socket with a kettle and a toaster on one small-kitchen circuit is a different question, and it is covered on ice maker electrical requirements.
- Somewhere level. The reservoir, the bin drain and the overflow all assume level. Older kitchens and cheap worktops are not, and a machine sitting on a slope reads its own water level wrong.
The practical upshot in a genuinely small kitchen is that the machine usually wants the end of a run, where nothing is above it and the wall is only on one side. That single position solves the lid-swing problem, the clearance problem and most of the heat problem at once.
If nothing here fits
Sometimes the counter genuinely will not take a nugget machine, and it is worth saying what the options actually are rather than recommending a smaller version of something that does not exist.
- Change the ice type. The smallest countertop machines are not nugget machines. The Frigidaire EFIC452 is 14.1 inches tall and clears a cabinet gap properly, and the Silonn SLIM21 is roughly 8.7 by 11.4 inches and 13.7 lbs. Both are covered on bullet versus clear. Neither makes chewable ice, and that is the trade.
- Move it out of the kitchen. A nugget machine on a sideboard, a bar cart or a utility room bench works exactly as well, provided the spot stays within the temperature range and has an outlet. That is the arrangement on the home bar page.
- Store it and deploy it. At 34 lbs the NewAir machines are the most liftable full-size options, which makes a cupboard-to-counter routine realistic in a way it is not with the 44 lb first-generation Opal.
- Decide it is not worth it. A legitimate answer, and the honest version of that argument is on are countertop ice makers worth it.
Choosing, in three steps
- Measure the depth you can actually give up, not the width. Subtract a few inches at the back for air, then compare against the depth column above.
- Check whether anything is above the spot. If there is, plan to slide the machine forward to fill it, or move the machine.
- Then pick on bin and documentation, because footprint barely changes what these machines produce.

At 34.17 lbs it is the lightest full-size machine in this set, nearly 10 lbs under the first-generation Opal.
The specification table calls out 'ice making current' rather than a generic rating. That is a more useful number than a nameplate and we wish more manufacturers printed it.

NewAir publishes the refrigerant charge (20 g of R600a), which almost nobody does. It is a small sign of a manual written by someone who expected it to be read.

Of the machines with published dimensions, the NewAir NIM030SS00 is the narrowest at 9.69 inches wide, followed by the NewAir NIM044BS00 at 9.75 and the Frigidaire Gallery EFIC255 at 10. But the Frigidaire takes the least counter overall because it is only 14.6 inches deep, where the NIM030 is 17.64. On a standard counter, depth is the dimension that runs out first.
How much clearance does a nugget ice maker need?
Three inches at the sides and rear on the GE Profile Opal 2.0 and the first-generation Opal, and four inches on the Opal 2.0 Ultra, per their owner's manuals. Most other manufacturers in this category publish no clearance figure at all. That gap is how the machine rejects heat, so blocking it costs you ice and electricity at the same time.
Will a nugget ice maker fit under my kitchen cabinets?
Usually, but with little room to spare. A standard counter-to-cabinet gap is about 18 inches.
